w/c 2nd March - After 11 months of being unable to use the main hall due to the unsafe ceiling the room was prepared ready for repair work to start (Picture 1) w/c 9th March - Work got cracking literally to identify the ceilings weak areas (Pictures 2, 3, 4 & 5) A large section of the ceiling unexpectedly fell to the surprise of the workers which it fortunately narrowly missed! (Pictures 6, 7 & 8) w/c 16th March - Received the great news that our application for a National Churches Trust grant to help towards the cost of the repairs had been successful. w/c 23rd March - Met with contractors to understand what additional work would now be required due to the section of the ceiling having fallen. Then all work was on hold due to lockdown. w/c 18th May onwards - Work restarted😊. Where the plaster had fallen the rotten ceiling joists and laths (caused by old water damage) were removed and replaced (Pictures 9, 10 & 11) An inspection was carried out above the ceiling in areas where there had been previous water damage to check there was no other rotten ceiling (Picture 12) The hole in the ceiling was repaired new split laths and lime/hair plaster (Pictures 13, 14 & 15) Dry wall screws were inserted across the whole ceiling pinning the plaster to the joists and all the cracks in the ceiling were filled and sanded (Pictures 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20) w/c 13th July - The work was finally finished, and the hall cleaned (Pictures 21, 22, 23 & 24) The work has taken longer than expected due to the pandemic and has unfortunately cost more than expected due to the additional work required. But the ceiling is now safe, and we will be able to use the main hall again. Huge thanks to Bullen Conservation Ltd, Maybank Buildings Conservation LLP and the National Churches Trust for their work and support on this project.
