Joseph Hobson Jagger was an engineer at Bottomley’s Mill (next to Buttershaw’s Tescos)
and in the1870s he went to the Casino in Monte Carlo.
After studying the Roulette wheel, and using his engineering skills, he devised a way of beating it.
How he did it is still a mystery although there are many theories.
Jagger placed his first bet on July 7th 1875 and in eight days won about £1m.
He died in 1892 and was buried at Bethel.
He did leave £200 to the Chapel for the upkeep of his grave.
